Uber and Lyft $175M Massachusetts Driver Settlement

Massachusetts residents who completed at least one Uber or Lyft trip between July 14, 2020 and July 2, 2024 may be owed cash from a $175 million class action settlement. Payments are automatic—no claim form is required—so eligible drivers only need to ensure their mailing address is current. Check the official settlement site for updates.

Am I eligible?

You likely qualify for a payment if you:

  • Drove for Uber or Lyft in Massachusetts at least once between 7/14/2020 and 7/2/2024.
  • Averaged more than 8 driving miles per week during that period.
  • Earned less than the state minimum wage after expenses (drivers above that threshold may still receive a smaller reimbursement).
  • Worked for both platforms? You can receive money from each fund.

Expected payout amounts

The settlement distributes money on a pro-rata basis using three factors:

  • Total miles you drove in Massachusetts during the covered period.
  • Your gross earnings during that time.
  • How far your pay fell below the state minimum wage after expenses.

Example: A driver 10,000 miles underpaid by $0.10 per mile receives roughly $1,000. A 2,000-mile driver underpaid by $0.05 per mile receives about $100. Actual payments will vary.

How and when you’ll be paid

  • No claim form needed: Rust Consulting will automatically mail a check to the address on file.
  • Address updates: Submit changes by Aug. 31, 2025 via the online address-update form.
  • Projected mailing date: Early Fall 2025.

Key settlement numbers

  • Total Fund: $175,000,000
  • Uber driver restitution: $118.4 million minimum
  • Lyft driver restitution: $21.6 million minimum
  • Case number: 2084CV01519-BLS1 (MA Superior Court)
  • Final approval hearing: TBD

Why was there a lawsuit?

The Massachusetts Attorney General alleged Uber and Lyft misclassified drivers as independent contractors, denying them minimum wage, sick leave, health benefits and other protections mandated by state law. After years of litigation, the parties settled on June 27, 2024, providing both monetary relief and forward-looking protections.

New benefits mandated by the settlement

  • Minimum earnings floor: $32.50 per engaged hour (rising to $33.48 on 1/1/25).
  • Paid sick leave: one hour per 30 hours worked (up to 40 hours/year).
  • State paid family & medical leave stipend.
  • Pooled health-insurance option for drivers averaging 15+ hours/week.
  • Company-paid occupational accident insurance (up to $1 million).
  • Transparent pay/trip data, anti-retaliation protections and in-app multilingual support.
  • Formal deactivation appeals process.

Important dates

  • Driver notice mailing: Aug. 1, 2025
  • Address change deadline: Aug. 31, 2025
  • Anticipated payment mailing: Early Fall 2025
