Frequently Asked Questions
What is the “Oklahoma Earthquakes Lawsuits 2024” settlement about?
The lawsuit—Salzman et al. v. Freedom et al., Case No. CJ-2024-0043—claims that certain wastewater disposal wells triggered damaging earthquakes, including the February 2 2024 5.1-M quake near Prague. The settling defendants deny liability but agreed to pay $555,000 to resolve the dispute.
Do I have to pay a lawyer to file a claim?
No. You can file a claim yourself at no cost. Class counsel will ask the court to award fees and expenses separately from the settlement fund.
How much money will I receive?
The exact amount depends on the number of valid claims and the extent of documented damage. Payments will be prorated among all approved claimants after approved deductions.
What happens if I do nothing?
If you take no action, you will not receive any payment and you will give up the right to sue the settling defendants for earthquake-related property damage covered by the settlement period.
Can I sue the defendants later?
Only if you exclude yourself (“opt out”) by September 27 2025. Opt-outs receive no settlement money but can pursue individual claims.
