
Hawaiian Electric $4B Maui Wildfires Class Action Settlement
Anyone who lived, worked, owned property or otherwise suffered losses from the August 2023 Maui wildfires may qualify for a cash payment from the $135 million class settlement fund. Submit a claim online or by mail no later than December 22, 2025.

You are a potential class member if on or around August 8, 2023, you fit at least one of the following categories:
- Owned, rented or resided on real property within the fire perimeters or 0.5 miles beyond them.
- Owned, operated or worked for a business in the same area between Aug. 8 – Oct. 8, 2023.
- Were physically present within the fire zone or within five miles of it from Aug. 8 to 9 a.m. on Aug. 9.
- Suffered physical injury or are an eligible relative/personal representative of someone injured or deceased due to the fires.
- Immediate family member of a person present in the fire perimeter on Aug. 8, 2023.
- Purchased plane or ship tickets to Maui before Aug. 8 for travel between Aug. 8 – Oct. 8, 2023, and incurred unreimbursed losses from cancellation or delay.
- Sustained property damage on Maui between Aug. 8 – Oct. 8, 2023.
- Owned or operated a Maui business that lost revenue because of the post-fire decline in tourism during the same period.
Excluded Parties
- Insurers and insurance syndicates with subrogation rights (except when filing for policyholders).
- Individuals who sign an individual settlement agreement before Oct. 7, 2025.
Potential Benefits
The defendants have set aside $135 million for class members who are not represented by private counsel. Payments are allocated on a pro-rata basis and may cover:
- Real and personal property loss
- Business interruption and personal income loss
- Evacuation expenses
- Physical injury or wrongful death damages
- Travel-related economic losses
Final amounts depend on the number of approved claims, attorney fees (up to $26.61 million) and administration costs.
How to File a Claim
- Visit the official settlement site or mail a paper form:
Maui Fires Class Settlement, Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 29699, Honolulu, HI 96820 - Provide your Social Security or Tax ID number and the address/value of damaged property.
- Upload or attach documentation that proves eligibility and quantifies your loss (e.g., deeds, receipts, repair invoices, medical or business records).
- Submit by December 22, 2025. The sooner you file, the sooner the administrator can validate your claim.

Why the Case Settled
Plaintiffs allege that Hawaiian Electric Co. Inc., the State of Hawaii, County of Maui and several private entities caused or contributed to the August 2023 fires. Defendants deny wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and expense of ongoing litigation.
