Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Carolina Arthritis Associates Data Incident Settlement about?
The lawsuit alleges hackers accessed CAA’s systems in Sept. 2024, exposing patient names, Social Security numbers, diagnoses, and other sensitive medical data. CAA denies wrongdoing but agreed to a $600,000 settlement to avoid litigation risks.
Do I need proof to get money from the settlement?
Documentation is only required if you seek reimbursement of actual losses (up to $5,000). No proof is needed for the estimated $100 alternate cash payment.
How will the amount of my cash payment be calculated?
After fees, costs, and the cost of two-year monitoring are deducted, the remainder of the fund is divided pro-rata among approved claims. Therefore, the final amount may be higher or lower than the current estimate.
Can I stay in the settlement and still object?
Yes. If you do not opt out, you may submit a written objection by Feb. 6 2026 and still file a claim.
What happens if the Court does not approve the settlement?
If the settlement is not approved, no benefits will be distributed and the lawsuit may continue.
