Who Is Eligible?

  • Sex trafficking survivors advertised on Backpage.com between Jan. 1, 2004 and Apr. 6, 2018.
  • Sex trafficking survivors whose exploitation was facilitated through CityXGuide.com between Apr. 8, 2018 and Jun. 19, 2020.
  • Representatives filing for minors, incapacitated persons, or estates of deceased victims (funeral expenses may be included).
  • Citizenship is not required—non-U.S. citizens may apply.

Potential Compensation

The Department of Justice seized and forfeited more than $200 million from Backpage and related entities. Payments will be prorated based on:

  • Medical expenses – doctor visits, emergency care, dental work, tattoo removal, future treatment.
  • Behavioral health costs – therapy, counseling, substance-use treatment, future care plans.
  • Lost wages – calculated using federal minimum wage or documented earnings directed to traffickers.
  • Other out-of-pocket costs directly tied to the trafficking.

Why This Remission Exists

After finding that Backpage.com knowingly facilitated prostitution and sex trafficking—including trafficking of minors—the U.S. Department of Justice seized the website in April 2018. The forfeited assets are now earmarked to compensate victims for financial losses suffered due to that exploitation.
